Luck Drawing Spell Hoyt's Cologne Recipe

To make approximately 66 ounces of Hoyt's Cologne, this old recipe was discovered:

1 ounce bergamot oil
1 ounce lemon oil
1/4 ounce neroli oil
1/2 ounce sandalwood oil
20 grains camphor oil
7 pints cologne spirit
1 pint rosewater

Mix and let sit for 1 month.

  1. Hi: Recipe for Hoyts cologne, says cologne spirit. What type of alcohol is best to use. Perfumers alcohol is hard to obtain without a permit/license. Thank you.

    1. If you can't get perfumer's alcohol, Everclear is really the best thing to use. It is banned in some states though, in which case you may have to settle for vodka -- but if using vodka, you will want to reduce the amount of rosewater, or else you might find the oils won't mix.

  2. Hi. I somewhat agree with the recipe above, but I can't seem to detect the sandalwood and camphor notes in my bottle of Hoytes cologne. However, I think there may be tiny hints of Lavender and sweet Orange in the top/middle notes and the base note is definitely Ambrette seed!

    1. It's in there. I've made the recipe myself, and in fact had to add more sandalwood and camphor to get it just right.

  3. Hello, I have a question, the oils in the recipe, are they fragrance oils or essential oils?

  4. The recipe is written for essential oils, but good quality, full strength fragrance oils can substitute.
